Using Fat Grafting to Correct Breast Surgery Complications

Providing the Best in Natural Breast Reconstruction to Orlando & nearby areas of Florida

Did you undergo a breast augmentation or breast reconstruction with another surgeon, but are now experiencing complications? Many of our patients come to us with multiple problems caused by previous breast surgery procedures. Dr. Hartog can use fat grafting to salvage many of these failed procedures, transforming a distorted breast into one that looks and feels normal again.

Breast Augmentation Complications

Some of the specific breast augmentation problems that we can correct with fat grafting include:

  • Capsular contracture – If the scar tissue around your breast implants becomes too tight, it can start to squeeze the implants, causing pain and distorting the appearance of your breasts.
  • Recurring infections – Some patients experience repeated infections, such as mastitis, which can lead to other issues like hematoma.
  • Exposure of implants – If you have thinner breast tissue, you may be able to see the edges of your implants through the skin, causing aesthetic problems like rippling.

Depending on the type and extent of your problem(s), Dr. Hartog will either use fat grafting to refine the appearance of your breasts, or he can remove your breast implants completely and use fat grafting alone to fill the volume. Fat grafting is a completely natural approach to breast augmentation that can help you avoid many of these complications in the future, since it does not involve placing any foreign objects inside of your body.

Breast Reconstruction Complications

Some of the specific breast reconstruction issues that we can correct with fat grafting include:

  • Failure of tissue flaps – When tissue flaps are used during breast reconstruction, there is a chance that the tissue may die, especially if the flaps are not connected to their original blood supply.
  • Radiation complications – Radiation therapy can cause complications during breast reconstruction if implants are used. In fact, over 40% of women who received radiation therapy either before or after breast reconstruction experienced an increased complication rate. Fat grafting is capable of circumventing this issue.
  • Severe capsular contracture – Breast reconstruction performed with implants comes with a higher complication rate for capsular contracture.;

Fat grafting is a 100% natural approach to breast reconstruction, eliminating the need for implants and complex tissue flap procedures. In some situations, using a cell-enriched fat graft with concentrated ADRCs can help repair areas of the breasts that have been treated with radiation therapy.
