I have just returned from the annual meeting of the International Federation for Adipose Therapeutics and Sciences (IFATS) in Quebec City, Canada. I presented my findings using both cryopreserved (banked) fat and fresh fat for breast reconstruction. With the help of Orlando radiologist Vincenzo Giuliano M.D. and using the latest 3-D ultrasound imaging as well as 3-D Vectra photographic imaging, we have demonstrated the excellent survival of cryopreserved fat from our as freshly harvested fat, without complications. An added benefit of cryopreserved fat is that we can now perform staged procedures without the need for more liposuction or general anesthetic. This makes it much easier for our reconstruction patients.
